Horion & Co. Greek Hybrid Names and their Value for the Study of Intercultural Contacts in Graeco-Roman Egypt
This article explores the corpus of Greek hybrid onomastic derivations attested in Graeco-Roman Egypt. These linguistically ‘mixed’ names, e. g. Anoubion or Besodoros, provide valuable insights into the nature of cross-cultural contacts and the formation of identity in Graeco-Roman Egypt. Theophoric derivations in particular allow us to corroborate earlier assumptions about the practice of religious assimilation in personal names.
The Maternal Line in Greek Identification: Signalling social status in Roman Egypt (30 BC – AD 400)
Since Greeks were generally unaccustomed to adding their maternal line to their identification, it is surprising to find metronymics in Greek papyri from Egypt. The rather exceptional Ptolemaic examples can be explained by Egyptian influence, but in the early Roman period there is a sudden rise in the use of mothers’ names. This article discusses the evolution of this practice and its relation to the socio-legal changes during the first four centuries AD.
THE LEGAL ADVICE OF TOTOES IN THE SIUT ARCHIVE (P. BM 10591, VERSO, COL. I–III)
This article offers a new interpretation of the enigmatic first three columns of the verso of P. BM 10591 from the Siut archive. The two texts recorded in these columns offer a unique insight into the processing methods of Ptolemaic petitions and the use of Greek and Demotic in the Ptolemaic administration. After the presentation of a new transliteration and translation, the legal and administrative context of these texts is scrutinized.
